  10. WhereIsIt? was designed with a single goal in mind - to create an easy-to-
  11. use, but powerful media catalog program, made to make our lives easier.
  12. Familiar and simplified user interface, extensive search capabilities and
  13. archive file support, combined with powerful report generator and compact,
  14. but rich in details database, all that should bring you the ultimate tool
  15. to handle your software collection.

  17. This version of WhereIsIt is shareware software. See ORDER.TXT for more 
  18. information on how to register this program. Be sure to read carefully the 
  19. LICENSE.TXT file before using the program. The unregistered version imposes 
  20. some limitations to the user, which are removed by registering the program. 
  21. More information about these limitations can be found later in this document.

  24. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  27. - Any 32-bit version of MS Windows (Windows 95/98/ME, Windows NT 4.0,

  40. to use with default settings and Quick-Setup Wizard for all those who don't

  51. Where is it? supports any media type Windows can use, including diskettes,
  52. CD-ROMs, removable disks like iomega Zip and Jaz, hard disks, network drives
  53. etc. It will recognize by name and collect useful data for most of them, too.
  54. Also, it is compatible with all Windows-supported file systems, including FAT,
  55. FAT32, and NTFS.

  59. Logical organization of databases, based on one or more catalogs. Each
  60. catalog can easily be transferred as a single file to another computer, a
  61. friend, a public forum...  Small catalog-file size with optional compression,
  62. with approximate usage of 1 MB for 40.000 files and folders (that's about 6
  63. fully filed CD-ROMs). Internal database structure optimized for very efficient
  64. access and small total size. Single-file, transferable catalog storage makes
  65. sharing your data easy.

  69. Fast and easy access to every item's detailed properties, from wherever you
  70. are. Want to get item's description? Just leave mouse pointer on it for a
  71. moment, description will popup as a tool-tip!.

  75. Detailed info on every object in the database (files, folders, disks,
  76. catalogs...) each capable of accepting up to 32 KB characters of description
  77. text, and a thumbnail image. Each file, folder, or disk can have assigned one
  78. or more user-defined, tree-ordered categories, up to 128 user flags, custom-
  79. defined icon... Disks in catalogs can be grouped into disk groups, forming
  80. a hierarchicaly organized, easy to browse and find collection.

  82. Auto-importing descriptions and thumbnails

  84. WhereIsIt offers a plugin system for importing descriptions and thumbnails
  85. during media scan, allowing you to develop your own description plugins and
  86. extend WhereIsIt's description importing capabilities. Included with the
  87. program is a comprehensive collection of plugins, covering all widely used
  88. description file formats, such as 4DOS/NDOS, FILE_ID.DIZ, FILES.BBS,
  89. 00INDEX.TXT... description files, and importing details about audio CDs,
  90. WAV and MP3 audio files, Office documents, EXE files and system libraries,
  91. fonts, HTML files, Adobe Acrobat PDF files, most graphic files etc. Also
  92. included are thumbnail plugins, importing small, downsized images from most
  93. graphic files in use today.

  95. Internal support for many compressed file formats

  97. Handling of most compressed file formats on media scan, including ZIP, ARJ,
  98. RAR, CAB, LHA/LZH, TAR, ARC, ACE, ZOO, GZIP, BZ2, SFX... Compressed archive 
  99. files can be presented as folders, showing their content. Archive files can 
  100. be extracted right out from WhereIsIt? to any folder, and a file compressed
  101. inside archive file can be viewed or launched with associated program with
  102. one click!

  104. Powerful searching finds what you need

  106. Powerful multi-threaded searching, with detailed settings on what to search
  107. for, where to search and how to search. Use either Quick Search to quickly
  108. find your items by name or description, or start up the Advanced Search with
  109. Search Expression Editor, allowing you to write complex search queries using
  110. full set of available search criteria and Boolean logic operators.

  112. Searching for duplicate items is there, too, as well as analyzing how data
  113. has changed since last cataloging, or checking if older or newer versions of
  114. files are present somewhere in the catalog. Comparing cataloged disk images
  115. also allows for tasks such as version tracking, if comparing disk images of 
  116. the same media taken at different points in time.

  118. Report generator with print preview for summarizing your catalogs
  119. -----------------------------------------------------------------
  120. Adjustable and professional report generator adds a final touch to your catalog
  121. collections. Report generator is usually used together with extensive search
  122. capabilities or report wizard, allowing you to first collect the items you want 
  123. in the report, while report generator handles processing items themselves, such 
  124. as specifying layout and details to be included, optionally sorting and arranging 
  125. items by their location etc. Needless to point out, you can use the built in 
  126. print preview, with adjustable zoom and full-screen capabilities.

  128. Report generator not only allows you to print your reports on your printer or
  129. send them by fax using the Microsoft Fax, it is also used for exporting cataloged
  130. data to other formats, including ASCII files, Excel tables, rich-text RTF documents,
  131. HTML documents, external database formats like SQL, XML, CSV, SYLK, or just send
  132. it directly to clipboard for pasting to some other application...

  147. MULTI-LANGUAGE SUPPORT
  148. ======================
  149.  
  150. This program supports selecting one of prepared languages to be used in
  151. program's user interface, and even preparing language files for currently
  152. unsupported languages (read more about this in program's help file).

  154. Please note that regular shareware version is only shipping with English
  155. and German language file by default, to save on download size. Many other
  156. languages are available and can be downloaded from program's home page on
  157. the Internet.

  159. If, for any reason, you would like to switch back to default English language,
  160. and are unable to do so in program because you can't understand or correctly
  161. display currently selected language, you can run the program from command line
  162. with this special parameter:

  164. WhereIsIt.exe /English

  166. This will effectively run the program with English language, ignoring current
  167. language setting in the program.

  170. UNREGISTERED VERSION LIMITATIONS
  171. ================================
  172.  
  173. Unregistered shareware version of WhereIsIt? has build-in some limitations in 
  174. order to encourage registering this software. All of the following limitations 
  175. are removed when the program is registered using the appropriate license key 
  176. file. For more information on how to register please read the ORDER.TXT file.
  177.  
  178. - The total allowed capacity of all media in a single catalog is limited to
  179.   2 GB. You will not be able to add more disk images to the catalog if the
  180.   total sum of all media capacities in the catalog already exceeds this limit.
  181.   If you want to add more data, you will have to open a new catalog.
  182. - Only one catalog can be opened at the time. If you would like to work with
  183.   another catalog, you must close the current one first.
  184. - Auto-loading catalogs on program startup is disabled. Registered users can
  185.   setup a list of catalogs to load automatically when program is starting, or
  186.   select to open all catalogs that were opened in the last session.
  187. - All reports will include a visible message saying they were generated with
  188.   an unregistered version.
  189. - Tips on program startup can not be disabled in the unregistered version. The
  190.   first tip will always remind you that you are working with an unregistered
  191.   shareware program.
  192. - Script language is only available in registered version. Script language is 
  193.   mostly used for unattended catalog updates, or it can perform special tasks 
  194.   on program startup, for example, updating the catalog data when program 
  195.   starts, so you always have the latest state to work with.

  197. Taking actions to illegally remove shareware limitations in any way and for any
  198. purpose is a violation of license agreement and international copyright laws, 
  199. and results in forfeiting all benefits and rights as an user.

  208.   shareware version, available on the Internet. This way, you can always use

  210. - Optional program delivery on a CD-ROM, including all add-ons such as
  211.   plugins, translations, help files, etc. for additional payment of $6.00 USD
  212.   shipping and handling.
  213. - Access to a free mailing list to be notified about program's latest news and
  214.   current development.
  215. - Free priority technical support via e-mail for a period of six months.

  217. Registration benefits can be suspended if registered user had violated
  218. license agreement, for example by distributing his personal registration
  219. data to other unlicensed users.

  222. DISTRIBUTION

  225. Evaluation versions of WhereIsIt? are distributed as Shareware. This means
  226. that users are encouraged, subject to restrictions described in the License
  227. Agreement, to share copies of this program with friends, associates and
  228. bulletin boards. Please remember that if you use this software you are
  229. required to pay the registration fee of $39,95 as described in the License
  230. Agreement (LICENSE.TXT).
